Under the Constitution Act, 1867, immigration is shared between the federal government and the provinces, with federal legislation prevailing. The following is a chronological list of the ministers responsible for immigration and citizenship in Canada from Confederation to the present. Names of deputy ministers and their dates in office follow names of ministers.
Between 1950 and 1966 and from 1993, the immigration minister has been and is responsible for citizenship. Otherwise, it was the Secretary of State with that responsibility.
