Genealogy and Ancestor Searches
Unfortunately, the Canadian Immigration Historical Society’s holdings do not include information about named individuals. While the Society does not have the resources to assist with genealogical or ancestor research, the following information may be helpful for anyone who is looking for records related to a person’s immigration to Canada.
The genealogy section of Library and Archives Canada’s website is an excellent place to start in searching for information about your ancestors. Links to various holdings, some of which are digitized, are available on their site. Possibilities include records related to:
- births, marriages and divorces
- census enumerations
- immigration and citizenship
- land grants
- military service
- named individuals
- Other searches
Many of the above databases are indexed and can be searched by name. A more complete description of each database can be found elsewhere on our own site. The LAC website also provides links to other sources that may be helpful.
Vital statistics records (births, marriages, and deaths) are, in general, the purview of the provinces. Most provinces have sites where one can search for records relating to certain individuals. However, in accordance with privacy legislation, only those records falling outside of a given timeframe are available.
